Visit Temple of the Tooth Relic

Located in Kandy, the 17th-century Temple of the Tooth (Sri Dalada Maligawa) houses what is believed to be the Buddha’s left upper canine tooth. This sacred relic draws daily pilgrimages of white-clad devotees carrying lotus flowers and frangipani.

Legend says the tooth was taken from the Buddha’s funeral pyre and smuggled to Sri Lanka in 313 AD by Princess Hemamali, hidden in her hair. Revered for centuries, the relic survived many threats and was enshrined in jeweled reliquaries. When the capital moved to Kandy, the tooth was placed in the temple built between 1687 and 1707.
