Visit Golden Cave Temple (Dambulla)

The Golden Cave Temple, also known as the Dambulla Cave Temple, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with origins dating back to the 1st century BC. The area is believed to have been inhabited from as early as the 7th to 3rd century BC. The temple complex features impressive statues and vibrant murals that were initially created over 2,000 years ago and later restored during the 11th, 12th, and 18th centuries. Notably, King Valagamba found refuge here during his 14-year exile from the Anuradhapura Kingdom. In gratitude to the Buddhist monks who sheltered him, he transformed the caves into a magnificent rock temple upon reclaiming his throne.

Visit: Turtle Hatchery – Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project (KSTCP)
Founded by Dudley Perera in 1988, the Kosgoda Sea Turtle Conservation Project focuses on protecting endangered sea turtles and their nesting sites. The project’s primary goal is to monitor and conserve local turtle populations, while raising public awareness about their endangered status.

A key aspect of the project is its hatchery, where collected or rescued eggs are safeguarded from predators and allowed to hatch in a protected environment. Hatchlings are released into the sea at night, and a few are kept temporarily for a ‘head-start’ program to improve their survival odds. Since only a small fraction of hatchlings reach adulthood, every nest, egg, and turtle plays a crucial role in the species’ survival.

Experience: Madu River Safari
Located near Balapitiya, approximately 80 km south of Colombo, the Madu River is a hidden gem for nature lovers. The river winds through a lush landscape dotted with 64 small islands, many covered in dense mangroves and uninhabited. The largest island, Ma Doowa, is home to about 300 residents, while the smallest, Satha Paha Doowa, hosts a tiny shrine dedicated to the gods of Kataragama. This serene boat safari offers close-up views of mangrove forests, local wildlife, and traditional island life.
