En-Route Visit: Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage

The Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage is located in Rabukkana, northwest of Kegalla, about halfway between Colombo and the ancient royal city of Kandy. Nestled in the hills of central Sri Lanka, it was established in 1975 by the Sri Lanka Wildlife Department. Spread over 24 acres, the orphanage serves not only as a sanctuary but also as a breeding center for elephants. Notably, the first elephant calf was born here in 1984. Today, it boasts the largest herd of captive elephants in the world. Between 1975 and 2012, a remarkable 67 elephants were born at the facility.

Visit Temple of the Tooth Relic

The Temple of the Tooth Relic, located in Kandy, has long been a center of Buddhist faith. This stunning 17th-century temple (Sri Dalada Maligawa) is believed to house the left upper canine tooth of Lord Buddha. Every day, white-clad pilgrims visit, carrying lotus blossoms and frangipani flowers.

According to legend, the tooth was taken from Buddha as he lay on his funeral pyre. It was smuggled to Sri Lanka in 313 AD, hidden in the hair of Princess Hemamali, who fled the Hindu armies attacking her father’s kingdom in India. The relic quickly became highly revered and was enshrined in nested jeweled reliquaries. It was brought out for special occasions and paraded on elephants, which are sacred to Buddha. Despite several attempts to capture or destroy it, the tooth remained safe. When the capital moved to Kandy, the relic was also relocated and housed in newly built temples. The temple was originally constructed by Kandyan kings between 1687 and 1707.

City Tour of Kandy

The tour includes a scenic lake drive and visits to the Gem Museum, silk shops, and batik centers.

Royal Botanical Garden Peradeniya

Located about 5.5 km west of Kandy, Peradeniya attracts around 1.2 million visitors annually. It is famous for its stunning collection of over 300 orchid varieties, as well as spices, medicinal plants, and palm trees. The garden spans 147 acres at 460 meters above sea level and enjoys around 200 days of rainfall each year. The site’s history dates back to 1371 when King Wickramabahu III held court here. The present garden was formally established in 1843 with plants from Kew Gardens and other local botanical sites.

Experience Madu River Safari

The Madu Ganga flows through Balapitiya, about 80 km south of Colombo. It is one of Sri Lanka’s unspoiled natural attractions, ideal for nature lovers. The river is home to a cluster of 64 small islands, most of which are covered in lush mangroves and remain uninhabited. Notably, the largest island, Ma Doowa, is home to about 300 families. In contrast, the smallest islet, Satha Paha Doowa, features a tiny shrine honoring the gods of Kataragama.

Visit Turtle Hatchery

At Kosgoda, the Sea Turtle Conservation Project (KSTCP), founded by Dudley Perera in 1988, works to protect endangered sea turtles. The main focus of the project is to monitor local sea turtle activity and conserve nesting sites. Visitors can observe the hatchery, where rescued eggs hatch safely away from predators before being released into the sea at night. Some hatchlings are kept for a short period for ‘head starting’ to increase their survival chances. This program plays a critical role in ensuring that more hatchlings reach adulthood, which is vital for the species’ survival.

Water Sports at Bentota

In the afternoon, enjoy exciting water sports at Bentota Beach. You can choose from activities such as jet skiing, windsurfing, and banana boat rides, making it a fun-filled day.
