Day - 1 Airport – Sigiriya

Transfer from Airport to Hotel in Sigiriya via Munneswaram

Visit Munneswaram Temple

The Munneswaram Temple near Chilaw is one of the five major Shiva temples (known as Ishvarams) of Sri Lanka and the Rameswaram islands. According to Tamil legend, this temple marks the site where King Rama prayed to Lord Shiva after committing Brahmahasti—the gravest sin in Hindu Dharma—by killing Ravana, who, though a demon king, was of Brahmin caste. Feeling the weight of his sin, Rama paused his journey at Munneswaram and prayed for purification. Lord Shiva advised Rama to install four lingams at Manavari, Trincomalee, Mannar, and Rameswaram as part of his penance.

Visit Manavari Temple

Located about 6 km north of Chilaw, Manavari Temple is the first place where Lord Rama installed a lingam to atone for Brahmincide after slaying Ravana. This lingam is uniquely called Ramalingam because it was consecrated by Rama himself. Remarkably, there are only two lingams in the world named after Lord Rama—the other is in Rameswaram, India.

Although the temple was destroyed by Portuguese forces, a commemorative pillar now marks the site. The idol of the Goddess is said to have been preserved and is worshipped today in the nearby Shankari Devi Temple.
